Pinot & Pooches Success!

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

We are so excited to announce that 2 of the adorable pups that visited us during Pinot & Pooches were adopted due to the event. First of the two is Miley, a 1.5 year old Australian Shepherd mix weighing in at 51 lbs. She came to the Oregon Humane Society through a Second Chance Program from Klamath Falls Humane Society. While there was not any prior history on her, the Oregon Humane Society quickly learned she is an active girl looking for adventure. Miley found her “furever” home with local WillaKenzie Estate Cellar Club Members. They came in a limo tour with friends and were just planning to enjoy a day of wine tasting when Miley came along and stole their hearts.

Our second adorable adoptee is Mandy, a 9 month old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix weighing in at 47 lbs. She came to the Oregon Humane Society through their 2nd Chance Program from Dogs of the Gorge Rescue. Mandy is a young, happy-go-lucky gal who loves to romp and play. She found her new best friends when WillaKenzie Estate volunteers, Tina & Brad, fell in love at first sight.

Vineyard & Winery Update June 4

Monday, June 4th, 2012

The vineyard crew has been busier than ever! Due to some warm dry days, our vines (and the weeds in between) experienced a large growth spurt. Luckily for the vineyard crew, and unluckily for us sun-loving folk, the sunny days have passed and we have moved into cool wet weather again. The cool has stalled some of the rapid growth, allowing us to do some major catch-up work. The crew is disbudding, suckering, and spraying for powdery mildew and blister mites. We did a little math and figured it takes about 30 seconds per plant to sucker and disbud, multiply that by 2200 vines per acre and 127 acres and you’ll have finished the entire estate in only 1,270 hours! Of course, that is only the first pass; the crew will go back through for a second time to do head thinning and more suckering before the month is over. Did we mention Pinot Noir is a labor-intensive grape?

While the crew is doing squats every 30 seconds in the vineyard, Thibaud and our winemaking staff have been doing a lot of wine tasting and pre-blending of our reds in preparation for bottling this August-September. For those reds that have not finished Malolactic fermentation, Thibaud has begun opening the cellar doors to allow some warm air in, hoping to get things moving along. Thibaud also attended a Yamhill-Carlton AVA tasting where winemakers from our AVA presented their 2011 pinots for discussion and critique. He reports that overall the cooler 2011 vintage has bestowed huge aromatics and dark color on these Pinots (not exactly what we would expect but not unheard of). From what we hear the 2011s will knock it out of the park (at least the ones from YC AVA!).
